OODA-Loop (OODA-L)
The OODA-Loop (OODA-L), first developed for military purpose by U.S. Air Force Colonel John Boyd, consists of Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act, which is also a useful tool for making decisions in the fast-paced business world.
The power of the OODA-L lies in its emphasis on speed and agility. It is not just a linear circle but a cycle of continuous feedback from Decision to Observation, and Action to Observation, which backs up the agility of the Loop. The PDCA cycle is similar in concept, but the OODA-L has advantages in terms of handling uncertainty and complexity, as well as intuitiveness in the age of VUCA.
By cycling the Loop, OODA improves individuals' and organizations' decision-making abilities. We, o2OG, strive to strengthen our own decision-making ability and improve communication with our partners by utilizing this system as an ideal model for individuals and groups in order to reach our goals.
The methodology is also useful for team leaders to familiarize associates with valuable steps in manufacturing, too. For example, setting three operational KPIs, such as yield, up-time, and change-over time, can help associates and other team members in production to understand the ultimate operational objectives of using the system.
