CO2 emissions from the steel industry account for 7-9% of global anthropogenic emissions. While this is an undeniable reality, the steel industry is committed to meeting the challenges outlined in the Paris Agreement. This agreement calls for efforts to limit the global temperature increase to within 2ºC above pre-industrial levels by 2030, with no further increase beyond 1.5ºC. How can we achieve sustainability within this framework?
We believe that "optimal sustainability" includes not only the steelmaking process but also the role and lifespan of the steel produced.
For example, CO2 intensity, which measures CO2 emissions as a percentage of GDP, shows that developed countries have a low intensity while developing countries generally have a higher intensity due to higher emissions. In developed countries, however, economic growth and increased CO2 emissions don't always go hand in hand. Some developed countries have managed to curb their CO2 emissions through measures like adopting energy-saving technologies and shifting their industrial structures.
Steel is an essential material for the construction of urban infrastructure, such as buildings and bridges. Similarly, demand for transport and other goods that contribute to CO2 emissions remains high.
To achieve optimal sustainability, it is important to offset these unavoidable emissions.
As noted in Emission in the Steel Industry, CO2 emissions are inevitable in steel production. However, o2OG is working to achieve sustainability in the steel industry and related construction and manufacturing sectors by leveraging the expertise of our entire group. Our aim is to achieve optimal sustainability while maintaining o2OG's Sense of Wholeness.
Our "Pursuit of 0 Accidents" policy serves as the foundation for these efforts. Our employees can manufacture in a safe, secure, and healthy environment, and our long-term sustainability is inextricably linked to this environment.
